Apr. 2nd, 2010 @ 06:00 pm Writer's Block: Take me to your leader

If an alien ship were to land in your backyard and choose you as the earthly representative of humanity, what would you tell them about our world? Would you consider going back with them for a visit?

I'd tell them, "Run!  For the love of whatever entities you might worship, run!  And next time heed those intergalatic "Danger!  Keep out if you value your life!" signs!"

And I'd go with them except for one thing...would you really want to explain humanity to another race?  Nope, me neither.

Wow, I haven't posted since May. Stupid Twitter. It just absorbs all my posting urges, and leaves nothing for LJ.

Ok, what has happened since May? I went to a wedding Memorial Day weekend and served as designated driver so my mom and her neighbor could get snockered. *l* Ok, they didn't drink THAT much, but more than usual.

Last month, I decided to bite the bullet and order a new computer from Dell. Well, it got backordered. Then backordered again. Then backordered yet again, but I got a phone call (automated) asking if I wanted to keep the order. I indicated I did. Then I got an e-mail that said the same thing. Silly me, since I had the phone call, I figured I could ignore the e-mail. And then Dell cancelled my order. Idiots. Melanie was down this past weekend, and we went computer shopping. And I ended up with a Gateway computer with all the features I wanted from Best Buy. And Melanie ended up with a Gateway laptop, even though she wasn't supposed to be shopping for a computer! *l* Anyway, I'm really liking my new computer. It's so fast! Unfortunately, it makes using my work comp very painful. Now, to convince the boss we really really really need new computers. :-P

My uncle is doing ok as far as I know. He went home, but then was back here last Thursday for tests because his numbers weren't right, which as far as I understand, is NOTHING unusual after a liver transplant. My aunt called me and acted like it was the end of the world, so I jumped in the car and drove through a thunderstorm to the hospital in downtown Detroit only to find out she needed someone to go shopping with her, because they were keeping my uncle overnight, and she hadn't brought anything. I really could have smacked her for scaring me like that. I didn't, but I wanted to. *sigh* Anyway, I assume they're back home now, because I haven't heard anything.

Conner is still nuts and lucky he's alive. He has started chewing my shoes...my brand new $60 shoes. I've caught him three times, smacked him with the shoe (and yelled), and it hasn't made any difference. I thought you only had to worry about that kind of thing with dogs! Fricking cat. I'm still living in hope he'll get big, fat and lazy soon. To that end, I've been feeding him as much as possible. *l*

So, tomorrow I am off to West Michigan to celebrate my mom's bday! She turns the big 60 tomorrow...but I was nice and didn't get her an over the hill bday card. I'll leave that one for her brother. *l*

My boss really pisses me off sometimes. Like how he waits until the last possible minute to do everything. He knew I was taking vacation last week...I even went to talk to him before I left to make sure stuff was done. So, over my vacation, I get two e-mails...one about a new project (only annoying in that he never gives me new projects when I have nothing to do, just when I'm on vacation or about to take one) and the other about our mouse protocol expiring. Now, I got the warning e-mail about the protocol (from the animal people) the week before I left, but I didn't hear anything from the boss, so I figured he was dealing with it. Oh no...in the e-mail, he says we need to fill out the transfer forms to put the mice on a new protocol, which means we need the number of mice and cages...but it can wait until I get back. So, I ran down and counted noses yesterday and filled out the forms. The problem is that he needs to sign them, and where is he? At a national meeting until Thursday! And the protocol expires Monday, and they need 3 business days to transfer them! AARRRGGGGHHH!!! I could have done this before I left...if I had known it needed to be done!

I know, I shouldn't let it get to me, but it's just an enormous pain in the butt. *sigh*

Wow, almost a month between posts this time, not that that's unusual for me. I wasn't posting before because nothing was going on, but lately, I've been too busy! It never rains but it pours, I guess.

Anyway, I'm back at work today after taking last week off. I spent it at my mom's, and am now completely exhausted from running around every day. I really need to come back to my apartment a day early to sleep. *l*

My mom and I did a ton of shopping, including a day trip down to Shipshewana to hit the big flea market. We also went out to garage sales both Saturdays and came home with bunches of stuff. I couldn't even bring it all home! I also found a dress for the wedding I have to go to on Saturday (yes, I have to go back to West Michigan again this weekend...shoot me). I was going to wear a sundress I already had, but it shows a lot of skin and my acne has been really bad lately...I'm not sure why. I also went to see my grandma this week, went to the eye doctor and spent lots of money on new contacts, and we had our own garage sale on Friday. It didn't seem like we sold a lot, but we made about $170, which isn't too bad. We took most of what was left to Goodwill, and it took both of our cars!

Another good thing this week...my uncle finally got his liver transplant! He came through the surgery ok, and my cousin called yesterday and said he was being moved out of ICU, so he must be doing good! I have to remember to call my aunt today and let her know I'm back if she needs to use my apartment.

Ah yes, my apartment. Before I left for the week, I asked for some work to be done while I was gone. Well, half of it got done. They did recaulk the bathtub and fix my screen door. They didn't fix the bathroom ceiling (paint is peeling) or clean the carpet. They also left a mess in the tub and didn't replace the shower doors. *sigh* I really hope they aren't planning on coming back this week to finish. As much as I'd like the work done, the reason I asked for it to be done last week was because Conner and I weren't there! Especially Conner. He gets into everything and loves to be underfoot. Although he is exhausted from a week at my mom's and is catching up on sleep now. I wish I could join him. *l*

I think I'm caught up now. I got up to date on all my webcomics (priorities!), worked a couple of hours in the mouse room (whee), filled out some forms that are now awaiting the boss's signature (of course, he's nowhere to be found), and now, it's almost lunchtime. :-)

And again, I have nothing to do at work today. I thought about going down to the mouse room, but there really isn't enough to do there. I could tail prep some mice, but I might as well wait for the new pups to be weaned and get them all at the same time. We don't have enough mice to do the experiments the boss wants to do anyway. So, I have to wait for them to breed...the story of my life, I swear. And that's just sad.

Stuff outside work is more exciting (relatively, which isn't saying much). I am trying to exercise more. To that end, I actually signed up for an exercise class starting next month, and I'm going to walk 5K for a charity on Sunday. :) I was also good today and parked in the far lot, so I have to hike to the car. I always thought that lot was about a mile away, but my GPS unit says it's more like a mile and a half. Go figure.

And speaking of the GPS, my mom and I had our first successful geocaching experience! We tried a multi-stage hunt a few weeks ago, and just could not find the first clue. We know where it should be, but not what it is. So, we headed out to Hofma Park on Sunday, and found two caches (mom found one and I found the other)! We also found the first clue of a multi stage cache, but my mom was freezing and didn't want to hike over the whole park, so I wrote the second set of coordinates down for later. Our first try left us very discouraged, but now we're geeked and ready to go find more! :)

The april drawing challenge is still going on. I've drawn more than last year, but haven't been drawing every day. It's not like I'm any good anyway (or ever will be), so if I don't feel like drawing, I just don't. I have two biggish cross stitch projects that are almost done (just backstitching now) that I'd like to finish by the end of the month, so they've been taking up a lot of my time.

I've still been twittering, but not as much. I guess the novelty is gone. *l* I do read it everyday though. Something weird though: I've gotten three new followers in the past few days whom I don't know. Now why in the world would you follow someone you don't know unless they were a celebrity? Weirdos. Maybe they're trying to set records for following the most people or something. Because believe me, my twitters are nothing exciting. At all. Even remotely.

More good news, we have a Hobby Lobby now! According to one of my stitching friends, the new store on Ford Road is open! I plan on going Saturday and maybe meeting up with some of my stitching group. :) Of course, this would have been way more exciting a few years ago, before Hobby Lobby decided that carrying different stuff than Joanns and Michaels was just wrong! Yes, heaven forbid they offer stuff that no one else did and actually attract customers! They still have some different stuff, but not enough to make special trips (we used to drive an hour and half to the nearest HL). But since it's close, I'll go.

Well, I think I have sucessfully wasted enough time. Go me. :-P

Twitter really is evil and addictive.  It's not like I updated LJ all that often before, but with Twitter, I'm even worse.

Anyway, I finally talked with my boss about the lab finances.  Actually, I just went in to get my timesheet signed and, he brought it up.  As I thought, our grant didn't get funded.  I pretty much knew, because my boss would have been bouncing off the walls if it had been funded.  But then my boss went on service and let his e-mail get super backlogged.  Apparently this morning, as he was unearthing e-mails, he found one from the NIH that said we MAY be able to get funding for two years (grants are for 5 years normally) due to the funding Obama approved.  We don't know for sure yet, but it would keep us going for a while!  My boss said we weren't quite to the wall yet, but a little too close for comfort.  Two years of funding would give us time to get some papers published (we have enough good data for at least two) and of course apply for more grants.  Such is the life of a researcher.  And is it any wonder I didn't want to get my PhD and have my own lab?  Blarg.

So, keeping fingers and toes crossed!

Not much else has been going on.  Conner's still a loon.  His current obsession is the laser pointer.  He also knocked my lamp down this morning, most likely on purpose to get my attention.  And he got it all right!  Such a brat.  I'm going to my mom's this weekend.  We have to go to a bridal shower (oh joy), but hopefully we'll be able to go out and find some geocaches.  There's four within walking distance of my mom's house!

The [info]april_drawing  challenge starts today!  And I've already drawn today, mostly because I have absolutely nothing to do at work...unless I want to go chip ice out of the freezer or reorganize the liquid nitrogen tank...and I really don't.  Hopefully, I'll do better this year.  Last year I had to drop out due to pain in my right arm, which I later found out was from a herniated disc in my neck.  But that is much better now.  :-)

I guess I'll go waste some more time until I can justify leaving.  *lol*
